Accurate Building Material Calculation-2025

Civil material calculation is an essential part of civil engineering and construction because it involves determining the exact quantity of materials required for a construction project. Accurate Building Material Calculation needs much attention and specialization in Estimation of civil material calculation. Many people make huge mistake in this calculation and hence it’s vary in project cost and procurements.

It’s important to know the different types of building construction material and their physical properties and units in which these are available sale, purchase and supplies to the clients and sites. For Accurate Building Material Calculation, good skill and experience along with the above knowledge is very helpful.

Accurate Brick Masonry Material Calculation-

Objective :- Calculation of Accurate Quantity of  the following in 1 Cum Brick Masonry –

  • Quantity of Bricks (in Nos.)
  • Quantity of Cement ( In Bags)
  • Quantity of Sand (Cft/Cum)
Quantity Survey Of BRICK WORK  IN 1CUM

Mortar ratio ( Cement : Sand ) :- 1:3 to 1:4

Mortar Thickness = 10 mm (avg)

What is 1.33 in MORTAR ?

Dry volume = wet volume x (100/100+33/100)

Dry volume = wet volume x (1+0.33)

Dry volume = wet volume x 1.33

If wet volume of mortar =1 cum

Than dry volume will be 1.33 cum

BRICK CALCULATION

Formula- (1mm^3 = 1/1000000000 m^3 = 0.000000001 m^3)

Brick size in mm        = 190mm x 90 mm x 90 mm ( WITHOUT MORTAR )

Volume of bricks       = length x width x height

                                  = 190 x 90 x 90

                                  = 1539000 mm^3
= 0.001539 m^3

PLASTER OR MORTAR USED =10MM

Brick size in mm = 200 mm x 100 mm x 100 mm ( WITH MORTAR )

Volume of bricks = length x width x height

                              = 200 x 100 x 100

                               = 2000000 mm^3

= 0.002 m^3

No. of Brick in 1 m^3 Brick masonry  = Volume of brick masonry / volume of 1Brick With Mortar

                                  = 1/ 0.002

                                    = 500 Nos Brick

MORTAR CALCULATION

VOLUME OF MORTAR

Volume of Mortar = Total Volume of brick masonry – ( Volume of 1 brick without mortar X Total no. of Bricks)

=Total Volume of brick masonry – ( Volume of total bricks without mortar )

                             =1– (500 X 0.00153)

                            =0.2305 Cum (Wet Quantity)

Dry Volume of mortar = 1.33 X Volume of wet mortar

                                    =1.33 X 0.2305 Cum

                                   =0.30656 cum

Calculation of Cement –

Quantity of Cement in cum = (Dry volume of mortar X Part of cement ) / Sum of  ratio

                                            =(0.3065 x 1)/ ((1+3)

                                           = 0.0766 cum

( Density of cement = 1440 Kg/Cum )

Quantity of Cement in cum in kg      = ( Quantity of Cement in cum X Density of cement )

                                                          = ( 0.0766 X 1440 ) Kg

                                                          = 110.304 kg

[ 1 bag of cement = 50 kg]

Quantity of Cement in cum in Bag = Quantity of Cement in kg / Cement quantity in 1 bag (kg)

                                                       =   110.304/50 Bags

                                                       =2.206Bags

= 3 bags (Aprox.)

Calculation of Sand –

Quantity of Sand in cum = (Dry volume of mortar X Part of Sand ) / Sum of  ratio

                                          =( 0.3065 X 3)/4

                                         =0.2299 cum

[ Density of Sand = 1450 Kg/ cum ]*

Quantity of Sand in kg  = ( Quantity of Sand in cum X Density of Sand )

                                      = 0.23441 X 1450 Kg.

                                        =333.355 kg

Quantity of Sand in Cft

[ 1 cum= 35.31 cft]

                                    = 0.2299 X 35.31 Cft.

                                    = 8.117 Cft.

Calculation of Water –

For Accurate Building Material Calculation calculation of water is very important. It is the ratio of the mass of water to the mass of cement added to concrete. The water cement ratio formula directly affects the strength & durability of the concrete. The typical water-cement ratio varies between 0.40 – 0.60 for different grades of concrete mix.

Summery
For 1 cum of brick masonry  (mortar ratio used for masonry is 1:3) required material quantities are as follow-

  1. Brciks- 500 Nos.
  2. Cement – 3 Bags.
  3. Sand – 8.12 Cft.

Note : There are different sizes of bricks are available in market, Depends on locations , moulding and backing methods. Standard Bricks are used for big projects, government projects etc. as all the materials are supplied in bulk quantity and hence factory take this order and follow the standards. While in small projects like small residential construction & renovation projects locally available bricks are used. FPS bricks are generally available in most rural parts of India.

Apart from the traditional clay bricks, many brick options are available. AAC blocks, Fly ash bricks, perforated Bricks, Hollow bricks, Insulated bricks are very useful in building construction.
